Take away the "me" from everything that is happening. Nothing disappears; the world is still there, but in an impersonal way. The world is free of the mind. The mind was the disturbance. It is quite and still, relaxation arises. The "me" thought is not necessary....If the "me" identification is taken away, what is left is your natural state.

"What is life all about?

A good question, isn,t it?

What am I asking??

Where is this life?....in me....or outside of me?

Is there any line between outside or inside?

I cannot find it.....who is trying?

I just cannot know....

Maybe life itself.

The thinking needs an answer but not life itself.

My Story

My search of the truth begun in my early youth. The big questions were hanging around all the time. Such questions which everyone naturally sometimes question. Once I was on a visit to one of my dearest friends and was reading a magazine for seekers. I read an amazing article of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. I felt a great yes to his way of explaining things, his quotes and comments. On some level he made a strong impression on me, I wanted more. At the same time I read books of TM-meditation, J Krishnamurti and of a Indian Guru called Sri Aurobindo and his movement. One of the main books this time was "Journey to India" by Paul Brunton. His struggle and search for a true Guru in India. He finally met Ramana Maharshi after a long struggle.

There is a saying in India, which I read in the book, it goes; "when the student is ready the master appears." In other words, I do my best but ultimately it is not in my hands. That quote somehow felt true.

One Event also in my early youth I still have a great memory of happened when I was walking on a small bicycle road. Suddenly there was a so called jump in consciousness. My sense of a personal self was crystal clear. My identity as a person felt complete. Before there were just the world, but now there seem to bee a world AND a 'me'.

The teenage period was chaotic, confusing, anguish full and lot of seeking. I wanted to do something with my life, I was after the Big One, to be famous was nothing, to be rich was futile, I was after God himself. India seemed to have something to offer, I looked for the east, Yogis , Gurus, Avatars, Buddhists and so on....After a while, I think it was 1984 I met a disciple and a devotee who was initiated to a Indian Guru from north of India. I was young and open to anything, he make a great influence on me. He as a person was also the total contrast to me. I saw that there was alternative way of living, to be. I had found a friend for life. This maybe sounds odd but it is just a way of expressing what took place. I could see that he was a light onto himself. He was luminous. That integrity, being, presence that light so to speak shine in the pictures of his guru. I wanted to meet him, I wanted to be initiated at any cost.

One Zenmaster wrote a book called "the three pillars of Zen". In one chapter an American housewife got a great awakening experience, a satori after a retreat, I would say. It hit me quite hard. She said;

"I am dead, there is nothing I can say is 'me'. There in reality has never been any 'me'. It is just a way of explaining things, a image in the mind, a pattern. I was dizzy and immensely happy. Everything that I gazed at radiated of beauty. In reality there is nothing to know. The physical world is an endlessly ocean of movement, time existence. But at the same time an infinite ocean of silence and emptiness. Every object is transparent and alive. ....there is nothing to do. to 'be' is a complete action in itself."

The point was that can this happened to an ordinary American housewife, then it can happened to me too.

In the spring of 1985 I was allowed to be initiated by the Gurus represent ant in Sweden and in the following winter I met the Guru in Bombay. I was 'doing' meditation, vegetarian, non alcohol, and still reading a lot. Rajneesh, Castaneda, Tibetan called Tartan Tulku (Time, Space and Knowledge) and a Swedish professor on sociology called Kaj Håkansson (The unseen), the Tibetan book of the dead and so on.

My first meeting with mother India was a big chock. The heat, the smell mixture of diesel, dust, incenses, spicy food, latrine, open fires, burnt rubber. Beggars, the horrible traffic, noise and faces everywhere. I was lost in this chaos. But in away I was familiar with chaos, I had it inside. After a while a great love started to arise to Bombay and India. A feeling of being at home. This is the true life; chaos, insecure, colors, traffic jams, people, faces, nothing works in the way you want. Beautiful, life as it is, how it is.

By heart I knew that my Guru was 'true' but there were lot of stuff in the teaching that didn't fit, it didn't make sense. I tried to 'make' meditation but it was a catastrophe, the body was acing everywhere. Something was wrong, but I didn't knew what. I was young and confused. Life was miserable. Identity crisis. Concepts, concepts, talks and words.

Anyway, two main points was clear "Anything that leeds to meditation cannot be wrong and what is in India is here to. Where ever you are, you are there". This was my newearned guidlines.

Between 1985 and 1990 I studied Indian Astrology. Interesting indeed. But the main lesson from these studies is how to see how concepts, believes has a great impact on the mind. The minds attempt to control future at any cost, manipulate God for its own purpose. Trying to figure it out what’s Gods next step would be. If you try use astrology in order reach a better life or finding some truth in it you will be disappointed, it is interesting but useless. My experience. I missed and longed for the juice of life. Life was desert like. Life was a mixture of working for a living, trying to make some kind of relationship to the other sex, and the constant seeking for the truth.

My Guru and Rajneesh (now Osho) passed away the same year 1990. A new Guru succeeded my guru and a new era toke off with a new approach. But the main thing was that the meditation did not work for me. Where is the fireworks, when will the goods be delivered, I was confused. The contradictions in the teachings. Concepts. Where is the real stuff? Inside the teachings explanations were lacking. As a spiritual map it seem to be a catastrophe, for me anyway. Maybe it works for others but not for me, who knows.

In 1990 I made a journey to The new Gurus Ashram and hade several talks which cleared up some issues. I could sense the same radiance from him as from my former guru. I was happy. Still impossible to sit in meditation, even if I tried. I hade a lovely time in the Ashram. Everything has an end, this to. But now there is some kind of a trust, or faith was growing inside. India in my heart forever.

I met the new Guru for a second time in Germany, Mainz, lovely Satsangs. Back to everyday life in Sweden. Nothing was actually happening in spiritual matters. I let go of all spirituality. enough. Just an extremely ordinary life. Work. Married. New jobs. New girlfriends. studying. Usual living. My dad died, great loss. Years was passing. Five kids.

THEN, something happened, I think it was 2006. I furiously started to reread old spiritual books. Along the road something has happened to me. I do not know what, but something is different. With the internet I found some beautiful clips of Osho. Then the Advaita hits me with full power. This two concepts start to sink in:

- There is no personal self or 'I' in the first place. (remember the American housewife and here Satori)

- we are already awake.

- The sense of 'I am' is not an entity or an object in itself (it certainly can bee felt like that).

- everything exists, but not for 'me'.

- The idea of me is just what it is, an idea.

- Can an idea meditate? No.

- The place where the 'me' should be found, is just aware space

If in the absolute sense all is an illusion, who is meditating? THIS is the reason why meditation isn't possible. This is not to say that practice and effort is meaningless. Spontaneously sometimes the thoughts is less and a opening occurs that makes everything possible. There is no one in the absolute sense that CAN meditate. Meditation can happen, but to no-one. The 'me' is an hypnotic idea appearing in the stream of thoughts. Very natural and completely misleading. The 'me' is not there, never were.

Question the 'me' and everything else collapse.

I started this Blog 2007 to use it as a some kind of a diary over my discovery from the Internet. Now I continue the Blog with an another purpose. The Blog is an reflection of my awareness, so to speak. The simple reason that I love the subject, Non-duality. It is meant to point to the Non-dual. To end this all, at last, remember. No words, however well said, never IS what is real. What is, is anyway. There is no point in claiming to be an advanced highly spiritual person, WHO is claiming that? Spiritual materialism.

There is nothing holy in being anti-social or being quiet. Why not talk and write? Why not use a blog?

What I talk about in this blog always remain untouched anyway.

If there is no 'me' in absolute sense, what is the problem? What is there to defence?

This is the story about the character called Roshi who is writing on this blog.

This day is your whole life...

I am going to take a break or time out for a while from my blogg. From the beginning it was ment to be a diary for me but I got lot of respons to what I delivered on the blogg. It all started 2007 when I discovered Non-duality. After many years of seeking and practising there were the answers. A great "Ahaa" arisied. In a simpel maner Tony Parsons, Jeff Foster, Nathan gill, and others pointed out a possibility I never had heard before....maybe in me something were ready for the message.....in absolute reality there never was "anyone" there from the beginning, and still...the appearance of a person is there. It IS and it isn't. The living paradox in life.

The reason we miss IT is beacouse of the simplicity of it all and the intimate nature of IT. We all are "That", like the eye can not see itself. We are that seeing, hearing, smelling whatever.

Bernie says something nice about when a 'knowing' appears of something that is impossible to explain or touching nothingness;

When we begin to touch this nothing and we have a knowing about it, for a while we feel contained in something but we do not know what it is. If you have ever watched somebody die, they are in the same place – almost. When someone dies they become less interested in the sensible forms and more interested in something that they cannot explain.

Their attention gets drawn into this place inside them rather than drawn outside - that is exactly the mystical way. The mystical way is when an individual begins to awaken to the pull inside that has nothing to do with the forms as they presently are, but has everything to do with what is animating and changing them constantly from a place of the true will. So when this begins to happen - we begin to touch this unknown place because we’re giving ourselves and you begin to awaken to knowing - it is a question of whether you continue to be nurtured by the knowing and your response to the knowing; then the knowing starts to move as an action in life.

As it moves in an action in life the knowing is being integrated into the life of a human being; you have living knowingness. Now you have a living Being beginning to take place. You as a Being, appearing human, have access to that place. There is an expansion inside and outside; you are no longer contained, you are beginning to be uncontainable. The containment that you may feel is the holding on to a personal life that is being threatened by this uncontainable place you are opening up to.

Shankar talks about the ultimate understanding;

The moment you understand or the understanding happens to man, that he neither talks nor speaks nor does - and all three happen to him as an optical and auditory illusion of light and sound - he will be relaxed in life, he will be alive in life, he will not have to worry about what will happen in life, because life happens to him whether he likes it or not. He simply enjoys the life as a witnesser - witnesser means “he who witnesses life happening”, “he who witnesses and understands that life makes life happen and it is not man who makes life happen, least of all through his mind.

Whatever man believes happens in life, he beliefs it, it is just a belief to him, but not an understanding. If he understands life, he will realize, nothing happens in life. Life is just a movement of color, light and sound, forms and shapes. An action is an optical illusion, and an auditory illusion in the mind. But man is convinced of an action as a reality. Man needs to understand, that in life neither is time existent nor is anything physically real. There is not anything such as substance in life. Everything, which is known, is not of any substance or reality in life. It is just existent as a thought in his mind. Such is the intelligence of life.

This is a long article By V.S. Shankar about meditation and practice. This issue have been always big and somehow important to me;

‘Tat Tvam Asi’, ‘Aham Brahmaasmi’: words of wisdom they surely are, but are they revered by one and all or, at least, by the spiritually-minded and the spiritually-acclaimed? Is the meaning of these wise words totally understood? ‘Tat Tvam Asi’ and ‘Aham Brahmaasmi’ mean ‘That Thou Art’ and ‘Thou Art Brahman’. These adages are not followed up with instructions to meditate.
Before that, it is rather important to recollect who uttered these wise words. They were obviously uttered by enlightened beings, for who else could have realised them? They are specific and leave no room for the existence of an individual who is a doer as a reality. These words proclaim that only the real exists and that reality is God, life, existence or intelligence.
The words also mean to convey that the recognisable entities, and there are many in this world, need to be illusory and not real. These words correlate with the proclamation of enlightened beings that the world is ‘Maya’, meaning illusory. These illusory, recognisable entities were few and far between in primitive times as compared to the present day, and this only reflects the degree of sophistication of the world.

So, there is no doubt that these words were uttered by enlightened beings. Man does not seem to remember them nor has he understood them. He appears to know these words, but knowing is not understanding: to know is knowledge, which is dead. But why have they been forgotten? Would man forget them or is it that life has made him forget? His forgetfulness cannot be a reality because to ‘forget’ would then be a reality and the proclamation ‘That Thou Art or Thou Art Brahman’ would not be true.

Man has not forgotten for to forget is not within his control. If to forget were real, he would always forget and there would be nothing that he could remember. Would a world be possible for such a man? It would be, and it is the case, for it is not man who thinks - thinking happens to man. If thinking is up to man, then he would never forget, and why would he? To forget means that the particular thought did not happen to him. To forget is proof that man does not think and that thinking happens to him. If he has to remember, and remembering were real, then he would always remember and never forget.

The enlightened beings were those to whom the wise words ‘That Thou Art or Thou Art Brahman’ were revealed. They understood that man is not the doer. If he is not the doer, it also means that he is not the speaker or the thinker. Both the speaking and the thinking happen to man. He is not the doer for life is not eventful, only the mind is. Life is a transformation-process of energy that is reflected as a singular movement, which is spontaneous, uncontrollable and unpredictable. This singular movement is projected as actions, which are an optical illusion. It must be understood that actions are thoughts, which are an auditory illusion of sound. The body, which includes speaking, is a movement of light, while the mind with its thoughts and thinking-process is a movement of sound. That is why ‘That Thou Art or Thou Art Brahman’ .

The enlightened beings could not have brought about meditation techniques. They were enlightened for they had realised that man was not the doer. They could not possibly have instructed man to meditate for they would certainly have realised that life is a singular movement and actions are not possible in life, as life is timeless and thoughtless. Thinking, speaking and the thought of actions happened to man and he did not make them happen. Thinking, speaking and the movement of the body, illusory though they may be, reflect the depth of understanding that has happened to man. Therefore, surely the enlightened beings could not possibly have brought about meditation techniques. It is wise to remember that the enlightened beings known to man have never asked him ‘to do’ or ‘not to do’ anything, let alone meditation. If they had, then they would not have realised ‘That Thou Art or Thou Art Brahman’

Meditation is an English word and its Sanskrit equivalent is ‘Dyaan’ meaning to contemplate. The word contemplate means ‘to understand’. Men to whom contemplation happened understood that the world, man and his mind, including time, were illusory. The understanding revealed enlightenment to such men and they came to be known as enlightened beings. Meditation does not mean an act. Life has made man believe that meditation indicates an act. If the world is illusory, meditation too has to be illusory and it only needs to be understood that it is so.

The enlightened beings in contemplation assumed a sitting position and asked men to contemplate, meaning ‘Dyaan’. Sitting was the movement that happened to them. The word ‘sitting’ happened later to the mind as part of sophistication. Man did not understand what contemplation could be. He believed that the enlightened beings asssumed a sitting position to contemplate, and life’s intelligence was so precise that at that very moment ‘Dyaan’ or meditation, as it is known, became an act. Thus, man believed that ‘Dyaan’ was an act that needs to be done to achieve peace or enlightenment. The enlightened beings realised that sitting too was not an act but a movement that appeared as an act to the mind. To men to whom such a realistion did not happen, the movement became an act and remained as knowledge, and remains as such ever since. So, the wise words ‘That Thou Art or Thou Art Brahman’ faded away from memory as life made man trust the mind and not life to maintain the illusory world.

During the sophistication of man, life gifted enlightened beings with understanding and another group of men with knowledge. As life progressed languages began to appear with a concomitant increase in knowledge. A specialised knowledge called spirituality soon emerged and meditation became part and parcel of spirituality. The enlightened beings understood that knowledge is illusory and is required to maintain the illusion, while man believed that knowledge conveyed the truth and so was convinced that meditation would reveal enlightenment, if practised. To practise meditation time and mind would be required and both of them are absent in life. Meditation only instils the desire to meditate more and nothing else. Life is a process of transformation of energy, which happens spontaneously, uncontrollably and unpredictably every moment. The proclamation of the enlightened beings that life is a manifestation of light and sound, ‘bindu’ and ‘naada’, holds good.

But why does man wish to meditate? He believes that meditation will still the mind or make the mind peaceful. How true can this be? If the world were illusory, would not the stillness and peace too be illusory? It most certainly would. And what is the point in stilling the mind when it is not present in life? None at all, to say the least. But how could the mind be stilled when thoughts are in constant motion as is the body? Would not stilling the mind, and that is if it were possible, bring the functions of the mind to a stop? It certainly would mean just that and, if the functions were stopped, would man be able to appreciate and admire the illusory manifestation of God? If the ego were false, and it is so, and the spiritualists confirm it too, then would not every effort be false, and that includes the effort to meditate?

How would man still the mind? Does he not have to use the mind to still the mind? If the mind were restless and needed to be stilled, how could a restless mind bring about stillness? Would not the effort to still the mind make it more restless? This is the finding of man that, no matter how many years he believes that he is meditating or doing meditation, he is nevertheless restless at the drop of a coin. If he were really practising meditation for many years or generations, he should have become still or peaceful by now. Looking at the state of man, it is quite obvious that he is as far from being peaceful as he ever was.

Could the peace felt by man, no matter how temporary, be real? And what value could there be in peace if it were temporary? This would mean that peace, which man so desires, would always be temporary and not permanent. But is it peace that he experiences as a result of meditation? How could it be when an experience is just a thought in the mind and not an actuality in space and time? This is a contradiction more than anything else because life is causeless and effectless and, if meditation results in peace, then it would be the cause and peace the result.

The fabric of the mind is duality. Duality happened to the mind and man did not make it happen. Why would he only to be entangled in its reality, if it could be that? God or life very meticulously and precisely manifested duality to manifest an illusion. God or life did so, so that an understanding could happen to illusory man that the world with its duality is illusory, which would allow enlightenment to reveal itself.

Duality happened when opposite words came close together and united, and this generated a meaning. The moment that meaning came into the mind, the words that were in union were separated, but joined together by meaning, and hence duality was born. Transcendence happens when the opposites unite again in unison, thereby obliterating duality. An understanding that opposites are not separate but are joined together makes the transcendence happen, though, as long as duality is present as a reality within the mind, the world will appear real to man. Understanding reveals that life is an optical and auditory illusion of light and sound.

Man is restless if thoughts are many within his mind and thoughts, being dual, will contradict each other: the contradiction results in restlessness. Therefore, when thoughts are minimal, a false impression of peace is experienced, and this is exactly what happens with meditation. Man is asked to concentrate on one thought or to focus on a spot: for example, the area between the eyebrows, which is considered as the third eye, spiritually speaking. The body too is a thought in the mind, and so would the third eye be. What good could a third eye be when the visible two have not brought in peace?

Recitation of mantras induces deception in much the same way. Instead of a single thought, a group of thoughts gets repeated giving rise to a false sense of peace, and strengthens hope for enlightenment. Man is unique in every moment for he changes every moment, so it can never be the same man who can concentrate on a single or a group of thoughts. If repetition of mantras could lead to enlightenment, all parrots would have been enlightened by now. Man is lost in a web of deception and when anything is enchanting, as is meditation, the possibility of bondage to it is obvious and a certainty.

Is it possible for man to meditate or practise meditation? It cannot be for he is not the doer. To meditate or practise it the same man is required to be present in life, but he is never the same in any moment because he is a collection of energy, which transforms every moment into a new man - and that is why man ages. If it were the same man that is present in life, he or she would never age. Therefore, meditation or its related techniques can never be done because man is not the doer, and they can never be practised for a different man is present in life every moment. This is why 'That Thou Art or Thou Art Brahman’ holds good. Moreover, if meditation and its related techniques were real, it would produce the result the very instant they are executed. There would be no need to practise. That they need to be practised is proof of their illusoriness.

Life makes meditation happen to man so that he will understand that it happens to him and he cannot possibly do it, and the thought that he does is an optical illusion of action, and the peace he feels is merely the absence of thoughts that disturb him. They will come rushing back once the mind begins to think of daily life. The peace is always during meditation and never after. Man pays a price for meditation and the price is life that is lost with the hope of becoming enlightened. The investment is huge while the dividend is minimal, if not zero. Life once lost remains lost and can never be regained.

What is it that makes man believe that the mind will become peaceful by meditation? It is an intelligent deception. For example, if man does not like the position of an object or the presence of an object, he simply shifts its position or discards it and replaces it with another. The same mechanism applies to humans too, which leads to a change in relationship or divorce. Life makes the shift and the change, and not man, and the belief that he does reflects superficial understanding. This makes him believe that thoughts too can be controlled and that meditation is the way to go about it. If man can control his thoughts, why meditate at all? He could simply stop the thinking or think of thoughts that would bring in peace. Life makes this happen to man so that he may understand that thinking happens and he does not make it happen. This understanding, and not meditation, reveals enlightenment that he so longs for.

If meditation were an act, and it is not, it would make any act meditation. Making coffee does not appear as meditation for it takes a few minutes, while it is believed that meditation should last for many hours. The longer the hours of meditation the greater is the chance of enlightenment, so it is believed. It is merely a belief and a belief is never the truth. The truth can never be the known by the mind. Meditation happens to man so that he may understand that even coffee-making happens to him. This understanding reveals that life is a spontaneous, singular movement in the timeless and thoughtless ‘now’, and to live in the moment is enlightenment. Meditation makes you think in terms of time and, whenever time is present, you are in the mind and not in life.

Your innate nature is a meditative state; life is a meditative state. You are always meditating and you need not meditate to be in a meditative state. You are in a meditative state whether you like it or not. Every moment is a meditative moment for man has not made the moment nor the illusion within the moment. Every moment is light and sound, which projects an optical and auditory illusory manifestation that includes meditation.

Meditation makes man feel superior to the other. It implicates him as the doer, which he is not, the very thing he is trying to get rid of through meditation. Man’s efforts defeat the purpose of meditation. Real means that which does not change and is eternal. Hence, if meditation were real, there would not be another act in the world; man would be in an meditative act eternally - this is the meaning of oneness. Meditation, therefore, cannot be an exclusive act. If it were, then daily life would not be possible. Since daily life is made up of multiple events, they cannot be real either; they need to be illusory, and that is what they are.

Live every moment, and this is meditation because you will be in life, which is a meditative state. Even if a single thought is present in the mind, and it appears real, you will not be meditating. Meditation is a sophistication of the singular movement from birth until death, and not an act. This is merely an in-depth analysis; it is not meant to infuriate or contradict anyone. It is only meant to indicate the intelligence of life to manifest and maintain its illusions. If man gets upset or infuriated, it is proof that meditation has not delivered the promise of peace and enlightenment. And if ‘That Thou Art or Thou Art Brahman’ were true, who could man be?

Trust has never cheated anybody, it cannot. And I am not saying that through trust people cannot cheat you. Remember, I am saying trust never cheats anybody. Sometimes it has happened that a disciple has become enlightened because he trusted the Master, and the Master himself was not enlightened. This strange thing has been happening down the ages many times.

It happened in a Tibetan mystic's life. He went to a Master. The Master was a fraud - and frauds exist in the world of spirituality more than anywhere else, because there it is very easy to cheat since they deal in invisible things. You cannot see. They say 'Here is God. Look into my hand.' If you don't see, they say you don't trust. If you see, they say ' Then, perfectly okay... can't you see?' and you say `Yes, sir.' And you are not seeing. When you deal in invisible goods it is very simple to cheat. In the marketplace there are frauds, but not so many. There cannot be so many there, because they deal in visible goods. There is some way, some criterion to judge whether the thing is right or wrong.

But in religion there is no way to judge. So out of one hundred, ninety-nine per cent are frauds. It is the best way to cheat people, nothing like it.

This mystic went to the Master, and the Master was a cheat. But this young man trusted - trusted utterly. He thought his Master was enlightened, and whatsoever the Master said, he followed one hundred per cent. It was rumored around the place that the Master was such a great man that even if you repeated his name and walked on the water, you could walk. Nobody had tried it before. And even if somebody had tried, then he must have sunk. Then there is always the rationalization that your trust is not entire. So you cannot catch hold of the Master - 'Your trust is not entire, that's why you sank.'

This young man walked on the water - and really he walked. And that became his usual thing. When you can walk on the water, who bothers to go to the bridge or things like that? People started coming and seeing him, and the other disciples - particularly the senior ones - became very disturbed. They tried in secret, but they all sank. So, even the Master was puzzled. One day, in secret, the Master himself tried thinking that `When my disciples can walk on the water just by trusting in me, then what can't I? I can do anything! I am the greatest Master in the world; my disciples are walking on water. Jesus used to walk on water and my disciples are walking on water, so I must be greater than Jesus!'

So he went, in secret of course, because he was afraid. He had never tried - 'Who knows?' And he knew perfectly well that he was a fraud. The disciple had deep trust in him, but he had no trust in himself. How could he have any trust? He knew perfectly well that he went on deceiving people. He walked and sank.

Then he called the young man and said `How do you do it?'

He said `I simply say your name - 'Master, I want to go to the other side' and you take me. And recently I have started flying from one peak of the mountain to the other, because I said 'When it is possible on water, why not in air?' So one day I tried and said 'Master, take me from this side to the other side' and you took me. Now I can do anything. Just your name...
The Master had to fall at his feet. And he said `You initiate me; you know the secret. I am an ordinary man, and last night I tried walking, and I sank.'

It has happened many times, because it is not really a question of whether the man you trust is cheating you or not, the question is that trust never cheats. You cannot be cheated because of your trust. If the trust is infinite you are impossible to cheat. Nobody can cheat you. Your trust will protect you. Your trust will become your very experience. Your trust will become your boat. Your trust will take you to the other shore.

How do I know if I am making "progress"?

In a dialoug with Scott Kiloby a person past on a really good question. It is about progress;

The Space that effortlessly allows Everything to appear and disappear

Question:  

If, having done the investigation, 'I' see the pointer that I am awareness and  not the thoughts / perceptions, etc," and I see that I get caught up in these  thoughts / feelings occasionally, and then step back, re-recognising that I am  the awareness that sees all of this . . . how can I be clear that it is the  awareness that recognises this, rather than a subtle game by the mind?
  Not sure if I'm being clear, but I guess the question is: are there any 'signs'  that one has the right perspective, rather than gaining a new, sophisticated, subtle type of conditioning?

Answer:

Excellent question!
It really comes from keeping this stuff on an experiential level instead of trying to think oneself into it. That's key!   In just recognizing this awareness as the space within which all thoughts, emotions, states, sensations, and experiences appear and disappear, the "signs" start to reveal themselves quite naturally.

You get a sense that, whatever you are, it doesn't come and go. Everything else is coming and going. But you—as the space itself—are unmoving and unchanging. There is a perfect stability in that recognition. It is not the stability that one finds in coming to a really good mental conclusion about or description of awareness. All mental conclusions and descriptions come and go. This awareness contains a certainty also. But it isn't the certainty one experiences when he feels mentally certain about an idea. Ideas come and go.

The "sign" that there is a recognition of awareness is that the stability and certainty is not of the ego at all. It has nothing to do with ideas and stories. It is in the recognition that your real identity is like space. The space effortlessly and naturally allows everything to appear and disappear. Yet the space itself remains unmoved and untouched in a way.   Real peace, freedom, and well-being reveal themselves in this recognition.

Formerly, you thought that the peace, freedom, and well-being were going to be found by emphasizing all those ideas and conclusions. But as you stand as what you are—awareness—you see that your real identity contains this peace, freedom, and well-being already.   In being really clear (not mentally, but experientially) that this awareness is what you are, something else is realized.

Nothing that appears within this space has a separate existence. It is like space is being everything so much so that the line between space and that which appears in the space just cannot be found anymore.

To see this inseparability, don't apply effort. Just notice where you are emphasizing thoughts that create the appearance of boundary lines. Often the boundary lines come from a subtle division being emphasized in thought, as if there is an awareness here and appearances there, or a witness here and the world out there. By just noticing where thought is superimposing this boundary on your experience, the boundary is seen to be just thought also.

When this thought appears that gives the impression that thought itself is separate from awareness, notice that the thought is a transparent image. It is empty, just as awareness is empty. You can't punch it, hold it, or anything. It is like a vague paper thin cloud. In seeing both that the thought is empty and that the awareness that sees the thought is empty, the boundary line between them cannot be seen. It line dissolves away, so to speak.

But what you know is that the boundary was never real. It was a concept. So even the idea of dissolving is a concept.

A free action and a free chooser cannot be found. A thought comes, followed by a desire, followed by a decision, followed by an action. Tracing backwards, the action is controlled by the decision, the decision is controlled by the desire, the desire is prompted by the thought. The thought arises spontaneously, itself unbidden, un-asked-for, unchosen. First the thought is not there, then it is. Nowhere in this process can a free will be found. Nowhere can a freely-acting chooser be found.

The person is not the locus of freedom.

The person and the rest of the world cannot be found apart from the awareness in which all things appear. The person, the mind, body and world arise as thoughts, feelings, and sensations. These are nothing other than objects in awareness, and are nothing other than awareness itself. The person does not experience; the person is experienced. As awareness, we are That to which these objects appear.

Thoughts, feelings, sensations - these objects arise from the background of silent awareness, they subsist in awareness, and they slip back into awareness. The awareness in which they appear is not itself an object but the background of all objects. It is our true nature. But the objects come and go unbidden, without autonomy. They are powerless and cannot do anything on their own. Objects cannot possess or contain freedom. Is there freedom?

The silent awareness in which all objects appear is the true nature of all things. Awareness says YES to everything. Even if a NO arises, awareness says YES to the NO. Awareness is without resistance, without limits or edges, without refusal and without obstruction. Awareness is not free, it is freedom itself. What we truly are is not the person but this awareness, this freedom.

The person is never free.

As awareness, we are never bound.

When one takes the "I" to be undivided, impersonal, timeless,  spaceless awareness, everything that arises is awareness. Let's say  there is an arising of the entire world with galaxies, people,  romance, mystery, travel, art, science, space exploration and  subatomic particles. Where can it be other than awareness? It is -  as awareness. Whatever was, is - as awareness, not separate from  awareness. Since awareness has no edges or periphery, there is nothing else for anything to be made of. Nothing fails to arise.  Where would the failure take place? There can't be anything missing.  What can possibly be missing unless it were somewhere else? But where  could that possibly be - with no edges or borders to awareness? There are no separate "places."  
Other pointer-words don't *define* awareness, but they give the flavor  or fragrance or esthetic of awareness: "presence," "love,"  "inclusion," "fullness," "home." Mmmm, very sweet!

Consciousness is all we ever experience

Rupert Spira is saying that; "Consciousness is all we ever experience", and then he goes....

...Use your own line of reasoning to ascertain the truth about yourself. That it seems reasonable to say that whatever is always a part of your experience is a part of your self. Simply apply that criteria to your actual experience.

Ask yourself what is always present in your experience and know that whatever you find is your self. Knowing is always present because 'something' is known in every experience. Even if what is known is an illusion, the illusion is known. Being is present in every experience, simply by virtue of the fact that experience IS.

Therefore you know for certain that you are Knowing and Being or Knowing Presence. These two elements (apparently two) are obvious in all experience. This Knowing Presence is in fact not two things.

When the dualising mind rises up and seems to separate this oneness of Knowing being into two apparent things (an entity residing in the body and an outside, separate world of objects and others) this Knowing of our own Being seems to be lost.

This Knowing of our own Being is simply the familiar experience of peace or love. In other words peace or love is also inherent in our self but seems to be veiled by the apparent separation of experience into two things. So Knowing, Being and Loving are inherent in what we are - that is our simple moment by moment experience. Just live this understanding in your everyday life in relation to people, animals, objects, situations and events, and everything will fall into place.

The biggest question maybe is why there is questions at all, Burt has an beautiful view over this issue:

Let us get to basics first – what is a question? The word ‘question’ means a quest, seeking, searching and needing. It is life’s way to help us evolve in consciousness. And, it is consciousness itself asking the questions according to the level of our awareness growth.

The questions that are unconscious inside you are the causes of your stress and negative reactions. In fact, all unresolved questions are our suffering. Initially our questions center on our ego and that is as it should be. They often consist of ‘why’ and also ‘how.’ The word ‘why’ is the first indication that the questioner doesn’t really want the truth but an escape from it. For instance if someone asks, “why am I suffering?” are looking for sympathy and someone who canb enable their victim-mentality. A fully matured question would be more like, “What is suffering?”

The nature of a question is the recognition that we do not know. There’s an old Zen saying that affirms, “If you think you know, then it’s clear you don’t know. If you admit you don’t know then you know.” This most basic of understandings is also the most powerful. The knowledge that trumps all other knowledge is the understanding that we have no certainty. A fact that frightens us is that the ego can NEVER be certain (nor secure or safe).

The moment we start getting to know this fact and accept it, it is at that moment we start becoming unstuck. We really don’t know except words from hearsay and books. This ‘not-knowing’ allows an investigation into life that is unobstructed by our conditioning, uncluttered by our information. Just remember this fact…It is the absence of knowing That allows the discovery of the new.

Why do we get stuck? It is because nobody ever told us that there is nothing to know for the mind except information. Information cannot help you anymore than black dots on a white page can. We fit what is new into what is old by seeking answers thinking we now know. This thinking we know simply repeats the same old patterns, old thinking and old questions.

When it comes to the Truth there is nothing to know and the only way to break free is to stop trying to know something thus open yourself to what is already in you and about you and really start looking in a fresh new way.

How do we come to know beyond intellectual knowing? -- by looking deeply into our natural questioning nature. This whole journey on earth is an evolution of consciousness. This evolution of consciousness has one single drive – to know itself! And, how does it get to know itself? -- Through the process of questioning.

Our every step in our consciousness ‘climb’ is a question understood (not answered).

Not grasping nor pushing anything away. In a sense, that's analogous to remaining in the present, because in the present everything collapses, and you really can't hold onto anything. The moment you grasp onto something, or you push something away, in a sense you're not in the present, because you're attached or identified with something that's passing away. So not doing that--not grasping or pushing anything away--really brings you into the present. this receding landscape in which everything was dissolving into this ever-present eternal moment, unencumbered by any kind of willing, or grasping, or pushing away. You start to taste the eternal.

"How do you know you are? Because you are!" You can't know this through thinking about it. All the thinking mind can ever know is that it can't know, because the thinking mind is dualistic. There's a subject trying to grasp some object. So that has to come to a stop. And when it does, there's no subject and there's no object. There's just Being, and the Being is infinite space. The Being is in everything. Everything is arising from this infinite space. The space is birthing everything and dissolving everything simultaneously. And everything is just this empty infinite space. This emptiness knows everything, because it's empty--just like the eye sees every color because it has no color of its own. So this "knowing" knows everything because it's nothing.

Anyway, someone is questioning if she is enlightened....

Q: So, do you now consider yourself to be Enlightened?

A: Enlightened?.... Why do I hesitate to use that word, Enlightened? Because to have the Realization is one thing, to live the Realization is another. To be a Buddhist is one thing, to be a Buddha is another. To know Reality is one thing, to be Reality is another. There is an embodiment process that goes on. There's a birthing, and a maturing, just like a child is born and grows. Literally, I feel I have plopped out of the womb of the Divine Mother. I am just an infant, not yet an adult--which is how I would define an Enlightened being, as someone who fully embodies the Realization.

Q: Then how would you label your experience, if anything...?

A: I like the word "Gnosis" because to me it has kind of the sense of I met God. I got to God, so to speak. I got into the depth of what's Real. But then what's that? What is God? Oh, the mystery of God! The mystery of Self! It's greater than ever! Now there's this infinite expression of God, or the Divine, or the Self. It's like Joel has said, "The journey to God has an end, but the journey in God has no end," because how could there be an end to God? Dr. Wolff talked about that, too. He talked about greater and greater depths of Space--that Consciousness is this infinitely revelatory expression of the Self, and that never ends. So what happened to me was, I woke up. I woke from the dream. And now, when I'm dreaming--which still goes on--I'm lucidly dreaming. Now, I know that I'm dreaming. And I want to share all this because I feel it's very important.

Everything that everybody has shared with me has been extremely useful. And this is happening to all of us. Our meditations are deepening, and this is going to be happening. That's why I want to share everything I can. Because it's happening to us together. But, if I say, "I'm Enlightened," there're all these connotations--"Are you saying you're Buddha? Are you saying you're omniscient?" No I'm not saying any of that. So, I'm afraid to say anything--but at the same time I can't lie. I crossed a line. I woke up. And because of that I can't be separated from the Beloved anymore. I can't.

Q: What is your advice for other seekers?

A: To just carry on and know that you're perfectly in accord with your destiny.

Here is a "story" about "awakening" by Joel Morwood, interesting....

....I abandoned my career, friends, and family in search of the Truth to which all the mystics seemed to point. And yet, no matter how hard I tried or how far I traveled, that Holy Grail continued to elude me. Finally, after I had given up all hope of attaining my goal, it happened. In a cheap motel room on the night of August 13, 1983, I Awoke to a Reality at once far more astonishing and, at the same time, far more simple than anything I could have ever imagined. Here is part of what I wrote shortly thereafter:

I jump up, turn on the light, and look around. Sure enough, I no longer see through a glass darkly. The veil has been lifted and the glass has cleared—no, more than cleared—it has vanished! I see the Kingdom, and now I am laughing wildly, because the great joke of it all is
that this exalted Kingdom I have been searching for in such anguish and despair is none other than the very room I have been sleeping in, with its dirty, cinder block walls, frayed curtains, and horribly grungy, blue-green rug! I could have shouted! I could have danced! I could have done anything for that matter, because it really didn’t matter. It didn’t even exist and never had. I was free.

What was it like? What was it not like? How can I tell you? I can't, but I'll be brave and try, anyway...It was not a thought. It was not a feeling. It was not an experience. I was everything. I was nothing. I was everywhere and I was nowhere -- nowhere to be found, hence, nowhere to be lost. Amazing Grace! Sacred Grace! Silly Grace! -- like those nonsensical little phrases that children make up and then laugh and laugh over while poor perplexed adults just shake their heads. And no wonder! You have to be a child to get it. And I was a child, a child sitting on a bed, bathed in rapture...

I had never expected this! What had I expected? Something exceptional, luminous, visionary -- the Platonic Forms behind all forms, or a Transcendental Light wiping out the universe, or maybe the Cosmic Voice of God calling me from eternity -- I don't know, but it wasn't this. This was much, much too obvious. It wasn't even right under my nose, it was my nose. And it was a finger uncurling miraculously in front of my eyes. It was a car horn, sharp and crisp in the night. It was the sound of my sheets rustling as I shifted position on the bed. It was the doorknob effortlessly staring me in the face -- they were all so effortless, and therein lies the true Oneness and Beauty of the world; we are all effortlessly together, brothers and sisters to the stars -- nor do I mean this metaphorically (though metaphor it is), for this was no gauzy vision full of images and archetypes. The Image had burst, and the Light was out, and the Light was everything. The Metaphorical World had come to an end, and I was AWAKE in the REAL WORLD, the world without end.

Here Francis talks about "awareness", interesting......

Everything, including all minds, "happens" within awareness. There is only one awareness. Your awareness, my awareness and God's awareness are the same awareness which is the substance of all things, literally "that which stands under" all things, that which understands all things. And that which "understands" all things is also that which comprehends all things, literally that which holds all things together. Awareness is beyond the duality of mind and matter. It is the formless and nameless presence that creates mind phenomena (names) and physical phenomena (forms).

Paradox of the theologians: if God is almighty and all knowing, it created evil, or at least he is aware of it and has the power to stop it. Since there is evil, it follows that God is not loving. Then they do a lot of intellectual tap dancing trying to prove that 2 + 2 = 3 (that God is loving and almighty, but that man is evil). Their problem is that they agree on the statement "there is evil", to which God could answer: "in your eyes, gentlemen, not in Mine".
